NSF Project Filming

Last Tuesday a film crew, as part of a Northeastern NSF funded grant project, spent the day filming my STEM classes of engineering, robotics, architecture and computer-aided design.  I, along with the students, signed away our rights to Hollowood contracts but for education we sacrificed.

The crew was very focused on seeing students in action, especially with hands-on and team-type of learning.  They interviewed individual students to get a sense of why they took the course, what were thier backgrounds and what were future plans.

The film will be part of a project that will use it as a recruiting tool for other teachers to attend training to inject project-type STEM activities into their classrooms.

I think we are fortunate to have the Waves and Vibes program available to us because it gives us, as teachers, classroom activities and resources to give STEM learning another  dimension for our students.  Having the Fellows is a bonus!

As soon as the film debuts I will be signing autographs on napkins and thanks to the Waves and Vibes for the added resources for our classes.

STEM Workshops UML

I recieved this from UML and I wanted to make sure the teachers in the W&V program were aware of the opportunities.  I have attended Fred M training in the past and it is alway well organized and has good content.

E mail below

Dear teachers,

We have received funding from Google as part of their “CS4HS”
(computer science for high school) grants program to conduct a 2-day
workshop for middle- and high-school computer science, mathematics,
and technology teachers.

We’ve organized a great program including 3 mini-workshops and 5
faculty talks, plus lots of time for networking and conversation
around computer science education topics.

The workshop will be held on the UMass Lowell campus on June 27 and 28
(Monday and Tuesday).  More information is available and registration
is now open at the workshop web site:

http://www.cs.uml.edu/cs4hs

I do have a small amount of travel funding to support a hotel stay if
you’re too far away to make daily round-trips. Please email me about
that, or if you have any other questions.

I hope to see you this summer!  Also, when you register, please be
sure to suggest discussion topics for the break-out sessions.

yours,
Fred Martin
